2006 Storm Chases

April 1:

Chased the dryline along the northwest OK and TX Panhandle border. The the upper trough was slower and the CAP remained strong. We watched some Turkey towers go up along the dryline. We ran into Roger and Elke Edwards in Arnett, OK.

April 15:

Watched a storm develop northwest of Holton in Pottowatomie County. The storm eventually became an organized supercell. We followed it east across northeast Jackson County into Southwest Brown County. This supercell produced a tornado as we headed east towards Horton. We saw a second tornado north of Horton, KS.

June 5:

Chased a nice HP supercell the day before David and I were to begin the MC tour. Dave had picked up one passenger from DFW on his way to KC. Phillip was from France and was great to chase with on tour. We intercepted the HP supercell north of Eudora, KS and chased it into the western KC suburbs.

Supercell: 1

Tornado: 0

Chased with David Gold and Phillip.

June 8:

We intercepted a nice supercell between Lame Deer and Coal Strip, MT. We had Indian Tacos in Lame Deer for lunch. The supercell had a nice wall cloud and good storm structure, however the low-level vertical windshear was too weak for tornadoes and there were not boundary interactions to help.

Supercell: 1

Tornado: 0

Chased with David Gold and the SLT’s MC tour.

June 9:

Once again the vertical windshear was weak across northeast WY. We got on an HP storm 30 miles southwest of Gillette, WY.

Tornado: 0

June 10:

Once again weak vertical windshear gave us another upslope HP supercell. This time between Gillette, WY and Spearfish, SD. This storm moved into the Black Hills and we stopped chasing.

Tornado: 0

Chased with David Gold and the SLT’s MC tour.

June 11:

The vertical windshear profile was better Today across western NE and southeast WY. We intercepted a higher based storm west of Scott Bluffs, NE. The storm just drifted slightly to the southeast and the base got much lower as deeper moisture advect west-northwest into the storms inflow. This storm has great structure but became slightly HP. The inflow was nearly 50 MPH and it had multiple wall clouds developing on its flanks. Several of these rotating wall clouds almost produced tornadoes, however the outflow was undercutting these new updrafts too fast. By sunset the the storm was moving into the Buttes as big HP supercell. This was our best catch during the ’06 MC tour.

Supercell: 1

Tornado: 0

Chased with David Gold and SLT’s MC tour.

June 12:

The moisture mixed out a bit on the high plains of northeast CO. We got on a couple of high based storm in northeast CO that moved into NE where they weakened and dissipated.

June 14:

Once again vertical windshear was weak across southeast MT. We got on a storm east of Lame Deer, MT, then followed the storm east as it evolved into an HP supercell. The storm passed north of Miles City and by sunset we had followed it into ND. We gave up on this storm after sunset.
